Global change impacts

Precipitation variability, flood risk, and vector borne diseases

I am an Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Vermont. I strive to understand how global change is impacting society, and have a strong interest in teaching and outreach on the topics of earth systems and global change.

Research

I conduct research on the impacts of climate change and variability on vector-borne disease transmission, flood risk, channel hydraulics surrounding vulnerable bridges, and more. I also am interested in precipitation nonstationarity, how it arises from broader climate processes, and how it translates into local impacts.

Teaching

I teach courses in hydrology, hydraulics, climate change impacts, and geomatics. In the past I have also taught introduction to environmental engineering and engineering systems (economics and decision-support). Teaching is one of the most impactful parts of what I do, and I greatly value my role as an instructor.

Consulting and Outreach

I am available for consulting projects, so please contact me for inquiries. I am available for hydraulics modeling, precipitation nonstationarity, and other climate change impacts consulting work. I also pursue outreach activities, including making instructional (and I hope inspirational) videos. Please click below for more information.

About Arne Bomblies

I have a background in Civil and Environmental Engineering, with an emphasis on hydrology. I am a registered professional engineer in Vermont, since 2016. I love learning about and teaching about earth systems, and have been particularly drawn to science projects that involve rugged adventure. This led to two field seasons in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica, and extensive field research in remote parts of Niger (13 months) and Ethiopia (5 months). These field sites are of course very different, but the common thread of all of my work is understanding climate change impacts. Please see “about me" in the menu for more information.
